Trail and Camp Lighting

   When packing up for your backpacking adventures consider bringing at least two sources of light. All of these are equally important.
   The first light is used for when you are out on the trail. This one has to be able to project a bright light that will enable you to pick out the details of the terrain you are walking on without too much area light that is not needed.
   You may opt for a headlamp, as these leave you hands free and always put the light where you are looking. You will appreciate these two traits when walking a trail at night.

The second light is used for lighting the camp. Placed on a stump or hung on a branch it will light the area for setting up camp, cooking dinner, playing cards and tent lighting. For this you need a light that gives you a wide area light without being too bright.

A lantern-style light is generally best for type of situation. It can be battery or fuel powered. Some models can be powered by the same fuel as you camp stove, thereby saving some weight.

Also consider carrying a small personal flashlight, like a AAA maglight. These are inexpensive, light and tough and are great for those times that a personal flashlight is required. There are many options for your backpacking lights.
