The Encyclopedia defines survival as:

  • a state of surviving; remaining alive
  • a natural process resulting in the evolution of organisms best adapted to the environment

Survival skills

Survival skills are techniques that a person may use to help him or herself through a dangerous situation such as a natural or man-made disaster. Learning these techniques and being prepared with the proper survival supplies will help you provide the basic necessities for human life: water, food, shelter, and the ability to provide medical aid, therefore helping you to attain your goal. A state of surviving; remaining alive.

These same goals are also used by many to better appreciate nature by getting out into the wilderness and for recreation, not just for emergency survival. Wilderness survival gear is meant for outdoor enthusiasts who want to have some creature comforts along with being prepared for any emergencies that may arise on that long camping trip.

Emergency Survival Gear Kit      What is a Survival Kit?

A survival kit is a package or pack of basic tools and supplies that has been prepared in advance as an aid to survival in an emergency situation.  In short, Survival gear is anything that can be used in an emergency situation to help you and your family get through.

Survival kits should contain sufficient supplies and tools to provide a person with basic shelter against the elements, help to them keep warm, meet their health and first aid needs, provide food and water, signal to rescuers, and assist them in finding their way back to help.

Who should have a Survival Gear Kit?Flood Water

Most often the answer would be that people like forestry workers, hunters, surveyors, or bush pilots who frequent remote locations or regions with extreme climate conditions should have a comprehensive survival kit on hand.  You would also expect to find survival and emergency supplies in a military aircraft or on a life boat.
However the truth is that ordinary citizens who live in, or close to areas prone to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornado or other natural disasters are the people that should also have survival gear kits and Disaster supplies on hand.  Unfortunate as they are, natural disasters are becoming more prevalent and severe each year.  The threat of terrorism after 9/11 and massive storms, such as Hurricane Katrina, have shown everyone just how important it is that we are all prepared for the next emergency situation.

Will you be able to survive on your own for three days (72 hours) without any outside assistance?

What should be in my survival gear kit?

This answer depends on whether this kit will be designed for home or office, or will be used in a wilderness setting.
However a good survival gear kit will contain non-perishable food, water, solar blanket for warmth, poncho to protect from rain, a tarp, gloves, light sticks, Dynamo powered FM Radio with LED Flashlight, signal device, Dust mask, Hygiene Kit, fire starting material, waterproof matches, Sanitation Kit, first aid kit with blood stopper Dressing, water filter and a multi-tool.
Remember that this survival kit should have sufficient gear to get you though the first 72 hours of a disaster.

Where should I Keep my Survival Gear Kit?

You should have a kit at home, stored in a location where all family members know where the kit is kept. Store supplies in a cool, dry place in easy-to-carry containers in case there's a need to evacuate.   Supplies also need to be kept at your workplace; you may be there when a disaster strikes.
Keep a kit of emergency supplies in your car in case you are stranded. This kit should contain food, water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables, and seasonal supplies.
